The telephone box on the corner of Shalford Road and Capel Road was purchased by the Parish Council in 2017, with the aim of moving it to the Booking Hall Cafe, to become a community information point.
The project has been long, with a few obstacles. We had to gain permission and lease for it to be sited at the Cafe. We also had to wait for UK Power Networks to disconnect the telephone box from the national grid. This disconnection work was completed in July 2019 and was paid for by a district councillor grant from Cllr Mike Banthorpe before his retirement.
Over the winter we have been preparing for how we would move the 750Kg telephone box and was hoping to move it in the spring of this year.
Finally this morning after a few months delay due to Covid, we were able to move the red telephone box from Shalford Road to its new home at The Booking Hall Cafe.
We are very thankful for the help of Paul Brown from Browns Transport at Cressing, who provided the lorry with crane and Martin Collins, who excavated the box from its original site and secured it, in its new position.
This has been a project managed by our Vice chair Paul Willis and after a few delays and worry how we would actually move the 750Kg box, yesterday everything fell into place and we proceeded this morning!
Over the next few months the area will be made tidy, with the help of the Friends of the Flitch Way and the Booking Hall Cafe. The telephone box will be refurbished, ready to be made into a community information point.
